Hey! I’m Shan, thanks for stopping by. This blog is about My Food Religion, making healthy meals that taste delicious! Healthy does NOT have to equal bland. I love to cook nutritious, wholesome food that is preservative, additive and artificial everything free. I prefer to use ingredients that are as close to their natural state as possible and have been through minimal processing. I am not vegan, vegetarian, paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free, fat-free, carb-free or any other food “denomination” in its entirety. I take what I like from different food approaches and recipes and adapt it to suit what make me feel good.
I’m a mum, a foodie and a coffee & bacon addict. I have a background in science and animal health & have done a wellness coaching course. I have done my certificate IV in Fitness, taught boxing classes and the occasional bootcamp. I am constantly researching into nutrition and various ‘food religions’ and love to learn about food, how our body’s process it and respond to it. I have a huge passion for gut health & cannot get ENOUGH of learning all about the gut microbiome and how it affects so many aspects of our body!
The thing with food and nutrition is, everyone’s body responds differently to different macro and micro-nutrients… You can’t “broad brush” nutrition which is why so many “diets” fail, they are not one size fits all. Our digestive and physiological make-up are a direct result of a life-time of conditioning: How many meals/day are you used to consuming, how large or small are your portions, have you consumed predominately carbs, proteins or fats throughout your ‘eating life’? ? I love healthy food and I love to experiment with food. I hope you enjoy following me on this food journey, I am sure there will some “MasterChef” moments, as well as some “DisasterChef” ones (no comment required Dad!), so come along for the ride!

Brilliant Shan!!! So impressed….
I really enjoy your Blog! I like how your not tied to a “type” of diet, just good healthy food. I tell most people, if you have to pick it out, and cook it yourself, then it was probably a good choice…just shop from the store walls and avoid the center.
Thanks for checking out my blog tmayeux20. That is a great philosophy you have, I object to “diets” in general, too many rules, just makes me want to break them 😉

Hi Shan!, I´m from Costa Rica, I recently found your blog and I really enjoy it. I´m using your ideas to feed my family. Thank you for your amazing work.
Thank you so much!!
Hi. It has been only 3 months that I have changed my life with this diet! My changes: 30 pounds off my body, better digestion, better skin, better gums, less aches and pains, no acid reflux, healthier outlook and more energy!
This is from a 63 year old guy who has lived with arthritis and sugar related problems his whole life. I have two hip replacements amongst many other problems. Jim M.
Go you Jim!! Champion effort!
As an expecting mother, I have been searching for a food lifestyle that would best fit me and my child. I love that you do not confine yourself to just one diet, and I’ve always felt that’s how it should be. Your advice on comforming diets for your needs makes perfect sense! Thank you so much for sharing your passion, I can’t wait to use some of your recipes with my son one day.
Thank you Payton and good luck with the new bub. You do what feels right for you.
Shannon: Just came across the article about you and your child.
Ignore all those naysayers; most complainers aren’t fit to be parents anyway.
Really admire your approach to Grace’s diet (even though I personally would find it difficult to follow after all these years; (‘m now 67).
However, I thank my late father for providing me with a healthy approach to nutrition, diet and eating overall – even though I don’t follow everything he suggested by a long chalk…
I shudder when I see the lifestyle led by so many people over here (currently living in the States and planning to escape back to Europe in the next year or so).. I’m an anomaly in that I make most of my own meals and eschew fast and processed foods as much as I can – especially because between Big Pharma, the Ag-Chem and farming industries, I believe that many people are being poisoned slowly nowadays. And they don’t realise or wish to accept this.. Not to mention the poor animals that are tortured nd killed cruelly just to feed an unthinking population.
Will be checking out your recipes and, going forward, making a HUGE effort to change my habits.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Inga
Thanks so much for your kind words Inga
What does the child’s father think of your dietary approach for the girl?
We are both completely on board with feeding her a whole food approach
Hi Sahnnon,
I always see you and your daughter.
Is there just a woman – club or what make the father? 🙂
I hope, you don´t hate men. 🙂
I certainly do not hate men. I’m not sure what your question is.
Dear Shannon,
by pure coincident I came across the article about you and your daughter.
I have been changing my nutrition but still eat too much hidden sugar 🙁
The Paleo diet, not really unknown over here, is not being put on a good light….nothing new.
So I am excited to check your blog regularly and get ideas on what I can prepare.
Maybe my family will find interest in the Paleo diet as well.
Greetings from Switzerland
Antonella
Thank you so much for your kind words
I just recently started following you from an article about you and Grace and your food choices for her. I did the same thing 27 years ago and now I have 3 grown boys that watch what they put into their bodies. And technically I don’t believe it’s a diet when your just watching what you put into your child’s mouth. Always go with your gut when it comes to your children. Anyway I love your recipes and all the different ideas you have. Look forward to learning more recipes from you.
Wendi from Waupaca, WI
Thank you so much and well done to you!
Hey Shan I just wanted to say I’ve read your story about putting your daughter on this diet and I honestly think you are an amazing mom for putting her health first nobody cares what they pump into their kids in todays society this shows you are one mom that doe’s and I think you should be a role model for other moms!! I just wanted to say your doing an amazing job don’t ever stop!
Thank you so much, I appreciate your kind words
I came across an article re: your choice(s) and execution of said choice(s) for you and your daughter. I think you are an amazing parent, not only for keeping yourself and Grace healthy, but for also never allowing another’s opinion to sway your ideals and parenting decisions! Your resolve is equally as important as your knowledge and experience when it comes to how you choose to raise your child. I wish I had realized how important nutrition and gut health are when my children were babies so they would have healthier eating habits, myself included. Iwas actually shocked ANYONE would criticize what you’ve chosen to feed your daughter. Even someone who has no medical or nutrition background should be able to apply common sense. Obviously, centuries of people lived without processed foods. THATis not rocket science, lol.
I have never had a proper relationship with food. It’s not due to ignorance, more so entirely mental and emotional issues. My entire life I have been a sugar and carb addict. It’s only been recently that I learned about gut health, natural vs processed, the microbiome, meditation and other ways to be healthy. Do you have any advice on how to convince my husband and other family members? I want them to be healthy and honestly it’s much harder to stick with my own changes when none of my loved ones follow along.
Thank you for any suggestions and advice you may have!
It’s not your job to convince other people, you do you and hopefully seeing you happier and healthier will be convincing enough for them x
I have only just now found you and your passions for food and good quality healthy foods speak to a need and desire within me to take care of myself.
You go looking for a recipe to figure out what to do with this weird thing they call jicama that I picked up at the grocer but come away with excitement to find out more about your journey and how what you’ve learned can help me.
Let the learning, living and cooling begin!!
Welcome!
felicitaciones.
I love this blog and I’m so glad I
found it. I’ve recently gone sugar, grain and dairy free but have found very little in the way of suitable and appetising recipes online. Your recipes are awesome and just what I’ve been looking for. No more steamed broccoli and rice for dinner for me!!!! Thank you so much 🙂
You are welcome!
